September 24, 2009 - New and Expanded Substance Abuse Programs Available
Presented by The Alcohol and Addiction Program

It has been a little over a year since I started as the director for the Alcohol and Addiction Program (AAP)…and it has been a busy year! The Intensive Outpatient Programs at both our Dover office (located within the Tuscarawas County Health Department) and the Carroll County Office continue to provide service to many clients struggling with alcohol and drug addiction. The increasing number of clients receiving help in these programs serves as a barometer to the magnitude of the substance abuse issues that we find within our communities. Most all of us know someone who has been impacted by substance abuse and also realize that this issue goes beyond the individual and is in fact a “family problem,” as

well as a community health issue.

In response to the growing need for services we have expanded our community outreach efforts by initiating a Friends and Family support program. This support group is being provided at the Health Department on the Third Thursday of the month from 6:00-8:00. Other community education and support programs are provided through the prevention and education services we offer within our schools, county jail and juvenile attention center.

Our county Health Department recently had the pleasure of being visited by Dr. Alvin Jackson, the Director of the Ohio Department of Health. Among many other important topics, he shared with us that in 2007, deaths due to narcotic poisoning exceeded the deaths attributed to automobile accidents. This statistic is staggering and quite concerning. At AAP we are working hard to address the issues connected with opiate dependency. Opiates are a class of narcotic drugs that include Vicodin, Oxycontin and heroin. We have recently been working with Summa Health Systems out of Akron in a collaborative arrangement to help address this problem by offering an integrated model of service that includes the most recent medical intervention strategies in conjunction with our intensive outpatient program.

We remain committed to helping improve the quality of individuals’ lives and work hard to improve the overall health of consumers within Tuscarawas and Carroll Counties. If you are in need of help or have a loved one in need, please don’t hesitate to contact our office at 330-343-5555 or 330-627-5891.
